Tell me about the IELTS test

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of people who need to study or work where English is the language of communication. IELTS is the world’s most popular high stakes English language test and over a 1.5 million tests are taken around the world each year. Wherever you are in the world and wherever you want to go, an IELTS result can help you get there.

IELTS results are requested by universities and employers in many countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. IELTS results are also requested by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies across the world. See where IELTS can take you

What is the test format of IELTS?

IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment. It was the original English test to cover the four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.

IELTS offers a choice of two versions of the test, to serve both academic and non academic purposes. The version of the test you take – and the score you need – will depend on the requirements of the organisation where you plan to study or work or your visa requirements if you are immigrating. Read more about the Academic version and the General Training version.

You will complete four components – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking – to obtain an IELTS result. The first three modules (Listening, Reading and Writing) are completed on Saturday morning. There is no break between these three components. The Speaking module is completed during the afternoon after a break. IDP IELTS Riyadh at Alfaisal International Academy also gives you the option to arrange to take the Speaking test at a time in the week before or after the Saturday test. Register here

Everyone takes the same Listening and Speaking components of the test. The Reading and Writing components of the Academic version are different to the Reading and Writing components of the General Training version of IELTS.
